![I am very pleased to report that all the butchers, with one exception, have most loyally responded to my wishes and provided plate-glass windows as a means to preventing their meat from being contamin¬ ated, etc., and 1 much appreciate their action. I always think by this informally “ getting together ” with the trade concerned, much more good can be accomplished. In connection with the one exception referred to, it is only fair to state that certain difficulties arose, preventing the improvements. These have now been overcome, and the necessary alterations will be carried out. In addition to meat, the Regulations also include bacon, ham, etc., and the shops affected have all taken the necessary measures to pievent possible contamination. SLAUGHTER-HOUSES AND MEAT INSPECTION. Siangfrier■ Houses.—-There are now four slaughter-houses in the district (one was closed during the year through expiration of lease) and in addition numerous places exist where pigs are killed. 1920. Jan. 1925. Dec. 1925, Registered ,..2 2 1 Licensed ... 3 3 3 5 5 4 I regret I cannot report much progress with the erection of the Public Abattoir. The Council have now decided to utilise the original site at Hollowrays Hill. Plans are now before the Council, and I earnes ly hope that early consideration will be given to this matter and that it will be pushed forward with all possible speed, because such a building is urgently needed in Paignton to centralise the slaughtering. jVIeai Inspection.—The new Regulations require that notice should be given of intention to slaughter. These notices have been du]y received and inconsequence a considerable number of visits have been paid to slaughter-houses at all hours (including Sundays) to inspect carcases. This particular requirement is very useful, because it enables me to endeavour to ‘examine all carcases. This, of course, has been impossible with all my other duties, but I have devoted considerable time to it, and have been able to examine 90 per cent, of the meat killed. Meat marking is not carried out in the district. 1,475 visits have been paid to Slaughter-houses and Butchers’ shops,. Urssotird Feed.—During the year the following has been condemned and destroyed, after examination, as unfit for human consumption : — Tons cwt. qrs. lbs. Beef . 1 8 3 10 Mutton . — — 2 19 Pork. 3 3 Offal. 7 3 22 Nature of Disease or Condition.-—Beef: Tuberculosis; Dropsy ; Inflammation ; Yone Taint. Mutton : Emaciation ; Inflammation. Pork : Inflammation ; Tuberculosis.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29983332_0016.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
