Tue atmosphere is that invisible, elastic fluid which every where surrounds the earth, to a great height above its surface.—It was formerly supposed, that common air, or any portion of the atmosphere, when cleared of vapours and exhalations, was a pure, simple, elementary fluid ; but modern philo- sophy has demonstrated the contrary, and it now appears that the purest air we breathe at any time, consists of an intimate mixture of various elastic fluids, or gases, in different proportions. Those properties of the atmosphere, called its salubrity and insalubrity, depend principally upon the greater or less quantity of one of its constituent principles,
