    In 1936 the Zachary Merton Home was opened by Mr. R. M. Holland-Martin, C.B., Chairman of the Zachary Merton Trustees. Funds for the erection of this building, the new lodge, and east boundary wall were provided by the Zachary Merton Trustees at a total cost of £22,000. In 1937 an extension was built to the Nurses’ Home at a cost of £10,300. The Home, including the new wing, was named The Colwyn Home as a tribute to the Right Hon. Lord Colwyn, P.C., President of the Hospital. In this year a new Isolation Block was also erected. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. A. J. A. Orchard, repsenting the Lancashire and Cheshire Miners Welfare Committee, who contributed £3,000 towards the total cost of £4,300. The Lancashire Boilers which had served the Hospital for over 50 years were replaced in 1937 by two new “ Economic” type Boilers and the Boiler-house and Engine- house Plant was completely modernised.
