    PREFACE. The author of this little book, being a foreigner, trusts that his readers will appreciate the difficulties under which he neces- sarily labors, in writing in the English language; and that he will be pardoned for any inaccuracies which they may discover in its pages He also hopes that it may be the means of doing some good; although he is aware that so humble a work cannot reasonai ly expect a very large circulation. Yet, if his really earnest efforts do but save a single life, he will have cause to rejoice.
