Some impute this Contagion to the Witch¬ craft of three Capuchins in Switzerland. But the more learned believe it to proceed from fome noxious Exhalations thrown out of the Earth by three diftinft Earthquakes perceiv¬ ed here and in our Neighbourhood in the Space of one Year. The Method of Cure for the Cattle^ As foon as ever there was any fufpicion of the Contagion upon any one of the Herd, the Tongue of that Beaft was carefully examined, and in cafe they found any Aptha or Blifters whether White, Yellow, or Black, then they were obliged to rub, and fcratch the Tongue with a Silver Inftrument (being about the breadth and thicknefs of a Six-pence, but in¬ dented on the fides, and having a Hole in the middle whereby it is faftened to a Stick, or Handle,) ’till it Bleed, then they muft wipe away the Blood with new unwalhen Linnen. This done, a Lotion for the Tongue is ufed, made of Salt and good Vinegar. ' The Antidote for the dileafed Cattle is thus defcribed.
