    PEEFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION. In endeavouring to bring the present Edition into harmony with the most recent developments of the subject, the Author has found it necessary, among other changes, entirely to re-cast the chapters on Physiology. In this he has received much valuable advice and assistance from his colleague, Professor M'Kendrick, F.R.S., including the use of a number of new illustrations, which he desires gratefully to acknowledge.
