![discovered, which by the presence of asymmetric carbon and by their rotatory power afford a signal instance of this coincidence. The substances are— Phenyl cystine CH,.CS (C,H ,) NH,. CO,H. Bromophenyl cystine CH,0S (C,H,Br) NH, .CO,B. These bodies, obtained ie Preusse and Baumann as products of decomposition of an acid contained in the urine, after the introduction of bromobenzene into the organism, had not been studied as to their optical character till Kulz+ drew attention to the matter after his discovery of the rotatory power of cystine; then the same property was recognised in the former bodies by the physiologists mentioned ?. To the researches of Ladenburg® we are indebted for active a-pipecoline and active a-ethylpiperidine. These compounds have been obtained from their inactive mixtures respectively; their constitution cor- responds to that which has been given for conine, the group propyl being replaced by the groups methyl! and ethyl. Let us add finally— Arabinose CH,OH (CHOH), COH. Tetroxyvaleric acid derived from it by oxidation 4. Saccharine, the lactone of the acid CH,OH (CHOH), COH (CO,H) CH,°. _ Hexylic alcohol of Roman camomile * C,H,(CH,) CH CH, CH,OH, giving on oxidation dextro-hexylic acid, corresponding to the laevo acid obtained by means of amyl] iodide’. 1 Berl.
