Galactocarbonie acid C,H,,0, ° Refutation of Contradictory Observations. — From time to time observations not in accord with the theory have been reported, but experience has constantly demonstrated their inaccuracy. The following compounds for instance :— Propyl alcohol CH,.CH,.CH,OH, reported active by Chancell*, Styrolene of Storax C,H,.CH.CH,, reported active by Berthelot °. Iodide of trimethyl-ethyl-stibine (CH,), C,H, Sbl, reported active by Friedlander °. B-picoline NC,;H,.CH,, reported active by Hese- kiel’. As to propyl alcohol, its apparent activity was due, according to Henninger *, to amy] alcohol. As to styrolene, I have been able to show® that its rotatory power is due to the presence of an active body of different composition. This body it is possible to isolate by repeated dis- tillation of ordinary styrolene. A certain quantity of metastyrolene formed by the heat remains each time in the retort, and a liquid collects in the receiver, having a higher rotatory power, the value of which agrees with * Journ.
