Definition : Inflammation of the brain substance, with or without implication of the membranes, usually partial, and in many cases dependent on local injury, or foreign deposit. Red softening (of the brain). Yellow softening (of the brain). Abscess (of the brain). Apoplexy. Varieties: a. Congestive. b. Sanguineous. Synonym, Cerebral hemorrhage. Sunstroke. Chronic hydrocephalus. Hypertrophy (of the brain). Atrophy (of the brain). Definition: Diminution of brain substance without induration or softening. White softening (of the brain). Synonym, Atrophic soft- ening. Note. — This form of disease is the result of imperfect nutrition, owing to deficient supply of blood, and is in most instances dependent upon mechanical obstruction, or degeneration of the cerebral arteries.
