![TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE TO THE THIRD ENGLISH EDITION. Since the appearance of the second English Edition in 1917, Professor de Quervain has issued two further editions of his original work. The present translation is accordingly made from the seventh edition of the original. This edition is enriched by an additional 127 illustrations and two new plates. The great impetus given to surgical diagnosis by the war is accorded ample recognition in this edition, and the information which lias been gained is distributed throughout the book in its appropriate positions, instead of being collected into one chapter, as in the previous edition. The entire range of civil surgery has undergone full revision and has been brought up to date. The characteristic note of the author pervades every chapter, and the whole book reflects his personal clinical experience. No reader can fail to be impressed by the vivacity of expression and the striking originality of the author's style. The author himself attributes some of the inspiration of his work to the instruction and example of his late teacher, Professor Th. Kocher. Professor de Quervain has now succeeded to the Chair of Surgery which was adorned for so long by Kocher, and the success which has attended the publication of his “ Clinical Surgical Diagnosis testifies that the mantle has fallen upon the shoulders of a great clinical teacher. ].
