    the rate of 33.7 per cent, for both sexes: for the males it was at the rate of 30 per cent., and for the females at the rate of 36.5 per cent. Kecoveries are generally more numerous in the female sex, from the comparative absence in them of diseases of the brain, complicated with paralysis. It has already been stated that in 42 of the admissions there was at the time of their entering the Asylum no prospect, however remote, of their insanity terminating in recovery ; and excluding these from the calculations, the ratio of recovery upon those probably curable was 62 per cent. Seven Patients left the Asylum in a state of incomplete recovery, of -whom 5 were transferred to other Institutions in consequence of changes in their settlements, 1 was taken in charge by her friends, and 1 was discharged after escaping and remaining concealed beyond the time when he could be re-taken. He has since been heard of as having obtained work in the neighbourhood, and as no application has been made for his re-admission, he is probably doing well. The mortality is at the rate of 8.5 per cent., calculated upon the average number of Patients resident throughout the year : 9.4 per cent, for the males, and 7.6 per cent, for the females—the proportion which usually prevails as regards the sexes is here present. This ratio is 2 per cent, lower than that of the previous year, and may be considered favourable : it is lower than that of any previous year since the opening of the Asylum. The ages of two persons deceased varied from 60 to 70, of two from 70 to 80, and one woman had attained to the age of 92 years. One Patient survived his admission less than 24 hours ; he had been much exhausted from abstinence and depressing mental emotions, and died in consequence. One female died within one week, one within two, and another within six; in all, seven persons died
