His Mew History was a new departure, the first of the kind, from the old lines of Geography that had stood the test of time for some thirteen hundred years. The geographical and astronomical opinions therein asserted led tosome discussion among the learned of Italy. Benaventanus in this book reasserts some of his new notions and mentions the names of many contemporary scholars, especially mathematicians and astronomers His views were not what would emanate from the Royal Observa- tory to-day, but they were then both new and startling.
