The docu- ment having been folded before binding, is slightly defective in the end leaves. 4° (61 6s 65) In 1732, when the French were encroaching on the northern frontiers of New York, Governor Cosby invited settlers to take up lands in that part of the county, and issued a proclamation detailing the terms on which land would be granted. This proclamation fell under the notice of Captain Laughlin Campbell of Argyleshire, who went over and, after viewing the lands, contracted with the Governor and Council of New York to bring over a number of Scotch families. This he did to the extent of some 48§ persons, but the Governor and Council repudiated their contract and never confirmed the grants. The case of his son, as here presented, de- tails the whole history of the transaction, and is invaluable for the history of that part of New York round Saratoga. Copies of the Proclamations, &c. are added as appendices. We never saw or heard of another copy of this evidently privately printed document. CANADA.
