A large harbour on the left with many moored ships, cloud-topped mountains in the background. White-walled colonial buildings in the foreground, with paths laid out to them. Identical with Thomson's negative numbers 14 and 24, therefore Hong Kong, but shown reversed on the disc. Film, not glass, negative

This is one of a collection of same-size contact prints made, in 1981, from John Thomson's original negatives. The glass negatives, made between 1868 and 1872, were purchased from Thomson by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1921 and are now in the Wellcome Institute Library
