![SCHOOL BATHS. I'he swlmmini^- ])ath at the new Technical Collect' was iZ> 1 oj)encd on Tuesday, the 27th February, 1040.. The schools <)[ lire town have at their disposal exceptionally ^’'ood facilities for swiinminty instruction. This is particularly fortunate, as the Cor])oration Baths have been closed to the schools since September, 1089, even (houph instruction in swimminj.^ will, of necessity, have to be curtailed, some period of time will be t^iven for this important aspect of physical education. Full use continues to be made of the Bury Hii^h vSchool playinc;' held, the last period of every afternoon beinp' devoted to ors;anised ^ames for 1.)oth bovs and ^irls. The scheme of physical education at the school is a comprehensive one, and is augmented still further by the addition of swimminj^' instruction which is yiven at the new Technical Colleg'e bath. It is to be reg'retted that the outbreak of hostilities has prevented the Authority from providing shower baths at the school gymnasium. This work, however, will be carried out when the time is more opportune. PROVISION OF MEALS. During the year it was found necessary to provide to school children 04,174 meals, comprising 80,650 dinners and 68,524 one- third pint bottles of milk. The dinners were provided by and served at four restaurants situate in ^'arious parts of the town. The School Medical Oflicer has visited each restaurant. The average cost per dinner was 5.8d., and the cost per bottle of milk was .46d. The cases are selected by the application of a scale \\-hich takes into consideration income and number in family. This arrangement, however, does not debar other children from receiv- ing free dinners andOu' free milk, inasmuch as the Authority is also guided in the selection of children for supplementary nourish- ment by reports of leac'hers, school nurses and school attendance officers, and all cases of suspe('ted malnutrition are immediatelv referred to the School l\ledi('al Officer for examination and report, and if free dinners and/or milk are recommended such provision is made. The Qjmmittee have now under consideration a Cooking Centre and Feefling Centres in the several parts of the town.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b28968712_0020.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
