![PREFATORY NOTE BY THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF THE BOARD. The first of the following reports (pages 1-104) gives an account of an investigation into the incidence and _bacterio- logical characteristics of tuberculous infection in children, which—with investigations on swine tuberculosis and on other problems of tuberculosis having immediate practical ,importance—has occupied most of the time of Drs. Eastwood land I. Griffith in the Board’s Pathological Laboratory during the last three years. The object of the present enquiry was to investigate the incidence of tuberculous infection in a series of children dying from all causes between the ages of two and ten years, and to determine whether in their bacteriological character- istics the bacilli found conformed to the “ bovine” or the “human” type. The presence or absence of tubercle bacilli in the bronchial and mesenteric glands was ascertained, these glands being examined not only by dissection and microscope, but also by culture and biological tests, whether there was naked-eye evidence of tuberculosis or not. _ _ In view of the importance of the subject, it was arranged that a parallel investigation should be undertaken at Cam- bridge by Dr. A. 5. Griffith. His report is given on pages 105-166 of this volume. The main results of the two investigations are stated in combination in the following table :— — Series of 195 deaths from all causes between the ages of two and ten years.
