    PREFACE As an evidence of the wide-spread interest in the subject of this essay the author submits a bibliography of 377 references. The essay is based upon an analysis of 130 cases which have been studied as originally pub- lished and of which synopses are appended; and upon the case of acromeg- aly and the gigantic skeleton, evidently acromegalic, which are described at some length. In the study of the latter case the author is under obligations to Professor Cunningham, of Dublin, for many suggestions in his memoir on the Irish Giant; to Prof. George McClellan for making a series of photo- graphs of the American Giant; and to Prof. 0. T. Osborne, of Yale, for the use of valuable illustrations. [The synopsis of published cases which accompanied the essay as orig- inally presented is not included in this publication.]
