    The labia majora are continuous in front with the mons veneris and behind with the perineum, and are connected at their posterior extremities by a fold of skin known as the fourchette which itself forms the posterior border of the vulva. On each side, situated in the posterior part of the labia majora, is a small gland called after the an¬ atomist, Bartholin. The gland secretes a clear fluid which escapes by a small duct through an orifice just outside the hymen. Labia Minora or Nymphyse.—The labia minora, or lesser lips, are situated between the upper portions of the labia ma,jora and are seen when these structures are separ¬ ated. They vary in size in different wumen, and if larger than normal they project beyond the labia majora. The posterior extremities of the labia minora gradually blend with the inner surfaces of the labia majora at their lower third. In front each lip divides into two folds, which, uniting with those of the opposite side, surround the clitoris. The nymphae are hairless. Clitoris,—The clitoris is an erectile and very sensitive structure situated at the apex of the vestibule and sur¬ rounded by the folds of the labia minora. Care should be taken, when passing a catheter, to avoid touching this body. Vestibule.—The vestibule is a smooth triangular surface situated at the anterior part of the vulva. Its apex is formed by the clitoris, its sides by the labia minora, and its base by the hymen. Just above the centre of the base can be seen the urethral orifice. The nurse should always re¬ member to swab the vestibule with some antiseptic solution just before passing a catheter. Hymen,—The hymen can be seen on separating the labia as a thin septum of mucous membrane perforated in its centre. In abnormal conditions the hymen may be per¬ forated in more than one place or, and this is a serious malformation, it may not be perforated, thus leading to the retention of the menstrual discharge.
