Copies of report to be sent to Principal Medical Officer. Cubic space to be allowed in hospitals. SECTION IV.-PRECAUTIONS IN BARRACKS, QUARTERS, AND HOSPITALS. 631. Before any new ban'ack or hospital is erected, the plans and site will be submitted to the Dheetor General for approval, in so far as regards the healthiness of the locahty and of the buildings. 632. The cubic space for men in barracks and huts, imder ordinary cu'cumstances, is laid down in that portion of the Regulations for the Commissariat Department [Revised Army Regulations, Vol. IV,] relating to BaiTacks and Quai-tere. Those regulations v^l not be departed from without authority. 633. Before any building is taken possession of for hospital pui-poses, the Sanitaiy or other Medical Officer, as the case may be, will, in communication with the Commissaiiat Officer, or a Board of Officers, if appelated, make a careful sanitary inspection of the building and its vicinity, and note the condition of the former as regai'ds external and internal drainage, water supply, ventilation, hmewashing, and general cleanhness, the number of beds the building is capable of containing, the number and size of vdndows, doors, and fireplaces, the amount of hght, the state of latrines, or water-closets, as weU as all other matters hkely to afi'ect the health of the inmates or the pui-ity of the air in the wards. 634. The Sanitary or other Medical Officer will report to the Commanding Officer the results of his inspection, and make any necessary recommendations for removing defects. In the case of hospitals selected for temporary occupation, the Com- manding Officer will, in terms of special authority given him for such pm-poses, foi-thwith direct such recommendations to be carried out, imless he disapproves of them, in which case he vnll state in writing his reasons, and immediately transmit them, with the recommendations of the Sanitary or Medical Officer, to superior authority. 635. The Sanitary or other Medical Officer, as the case may be, Avill at the same time transmit a copy of every such report to the Principal Medical Officer, stating also the steps taken to carry out his recommendations, and the Principal Medical Officer will forthwith forward every such report to the Dhector General, with any remarks he may have to make on the same. i , , . 636.
