VIII.-STATIONABY FIELD HOSPITALS FOR AN ABMY ONj ACTIVE SERVICE. 398 The thii-cl hne of medical assistance in] the field will consist of stationaiy field hospitals along the line or hnes of commnnication, and at the base of operations.^ 399. In choosing sites for stationary hospitals, cine attention wiU be paid to the character and elevation of the conntiy, the natiure of the soH, the proximity and pmity of the water supply, the practicabmty of di-ainage, the shelter afiorded by wood or high land from cold mnds, and care will be taken that the position is easy of access and at a convenient distance from the mam road, and, as far as cncnmstances Avill admit, m accordance withmstructions contained m the sanitary section of the medical regulations. 400. If possible these hospitals wiU be estabhshed m biulchngs or wooden huts at the port of embarkation, and in towns, villages, or farm-honses along the lines of commimication. Hospital mar- qnees wiU be stored at the base of operations,_ and issued for stationary hospitals when other shelter is not available. 401. In forming stationary field hospitals along the Knes of communication, existing liaes of railway and roads will be utflized. The hospitals and provision stations will be placed at regular and convenient intervals so as to suit the position of the forces, and the cu-cumstances of the wounded. 402. Stationary field hospitals will have equipment similar to movable field hospitals as regards medical and surgical stores and ward utensils, but double the quantity of hospital clothing will be allowed ; they ^all not be supphed mth special wagons or transport. 403. In establishing hospitals at the base, or on hnes of communication, the Deputy Surgeon Generals concerned will dii-ect an Ofiicer of the Army Hospital Corps to apply to the Commissariat or Ordnance Store Departments for the necessary stores, and to the Royal Engineer Department in the event of the erection of wooden huts or alterations to existing buildings being required, and will keep the Surgeon General of the line of communications informed on all such points. 404. The sick and wounded from the army in front wiU be transported by the ambulance wagons of the second line as far as the advanced depot, where other conveyance pro\aded by the Commissariat on the requisition of the Surgeon General of the line of communications, or the Deputy Surgeon General with the Road Commandant will meet and convey them to their destina- tion. 405. On no accoimt are the ambulance wagons of the second line to convey sick and wounded beyond the advanced depot. 406. Before the removal of sick and wounded, care will be taken in the fu-st instance to ascertain through the RoadCom- Third line of assistance. Choosing of sites. Bmldings or huts foi hospitals.
