    the district, but as this involves a considerable amount of labour, I have not been able to obtain it in time for this report. It must be obvious that the social status of the inhabitants as shown by their means and occupations must be considered as a very important factor in forming a fair estimate of the sanitary condition of any given district. The only figures bearing on this point that I have been able so far to obtain are those of the house-to-house inspections, which appear to show that there are approximately at the present time about 1,900 houses rated at under £'io per annum in a total of rather less than 5,000 houses.
