![♦ Inspectorial Work. Drainage, Nuisances and so forth. Details cf this work are set forth in the two tables imme¬ diate]}7 preceding, which will repay attention as indicating the woik accomplished by the Sanitary Staff. The following is a summary of the salient features of the tables. No fewer than 20,851 separate inspections were made searching for insanitary conditions. Also, in addition, 6,230 visits were made to infected houses for disinfecting and enquiry purposes. The important matter of flushing of drains, etc., following infectious cases, and for the abatement of nuisances, was carried out in 2,471 cases, in 227 of which cases the water used was paid for by the property owners. The flushing of the street gullies, which is equally important, is under the charge of the Borough Engineer’s Department. Information of choked gullies found by the Inspectors have been notified to the Department concerned. In 2,941 inspections no ground of complaint in respect of the sanitary condition of the premises were found. Complaints of nuisances to the number of 573 have been made at the Office, and have received prompt attention by the Inspectoral Staff. The number of entries in the Repori Books of the Department have been 774; of these 335 were not reported to the Committee, as the work had been commenced before the Committee met. In respect to the remaining, 896 Statutory Notices, were issued. Four hundred and forty-eight sections of new drains have been tested by smoke, and 345 new houses and other premises have been inspected as to the correctness and sufficiency of the sanitary fitments thereof. Common Lodging Houses. The. Common Lodgmg Houses in the Borough number 18, and are kept by 14 persons.
