    This would fall into line with the work of Carlinfanti, mentioned on page 358. The investigations of Andresen 11 were made possible by the find ing of a powerful human anti-P serum. An anti-P antibody was reported by Wiener and Peters. 21 It was considered that this antibody was an immune one, stimulated by a previous blood transfusion; the evidence for the immunization, however, is not so convincing as in the second such example reported by Wiener. 22 In this case a pretransfusion sample of the patient’s serum lacked the antibody which was found in a sample taken ten days after the transfusion; the donor was P+. Wiener and Unger 13 reported another example of anti-P, found following a transfusion, which was unusual in that the antibody was active at 37 0 C., though weakly so. This, together with the fact that the antibody had not been found before the transfusion and that the titre had fallen a week after its discovery, convinced the authors that the antibody was immune in origin. Moureau 23 describes the investigation of the blood of a man who had died of a severe haemolytic reaction eighteen hours after a transfusion. The patient had been transfused many times before, and each transfusion (including the first) had been followed by reactions which in time became more and more severe. In the serum of the dead man Moureau found anti-P. The antibody agglutinated P positive blood at 37 0 C.; and, after the addition of complement, it lysed the blood of a P+ control and that of the three last donors, but not the blood of a P— control. The only details given of the identification of the antibody with anti-P is that it reacted with one P+, and failed to react with one P—, control. This would be quite inadequate for identification and presumably other tests not detailed were carried out. Allott and Holman 24 found three examples of anti-P during routine tests for anti -Rh, and Dunsford 25 reported two examples found during the routine ante-natal examinations of maternal sera. As far as we know anti-P has not yet been blamed for haemolytic disease. The work of Henningsen, 8 using his very sensitive technique for the detection of anti-P, has entirely changed our way of looking at anti-P sera. They were thought to be great rarities when they were, in fact, common; but strong examples are rare, and it is only these that previously could be recognized.
