In 1617 an edict had re-established the Catholic religion in Bearn ordering the Protestants to restore the ecclesiastical property which they had secularised in the last half century. They refused, and the King (Louis XIII), entering the province with an army, compelled the execu- tion of the edict. The whole Huguenot party was disturbed, and in 1620 a religious war broke out. | On the death of De Luynes, whom Louis had appointed constable, the King carried on the war alone, and in the following year conducted a vigorous campaign, sacking the places which he took, and ordering severe punishments in them, many of the Protestants fleeing to England for protection.
