He found that they developed sub- cutaneous and intramuscular hemorrhages on certain diets which, it was supposed, contained all the requisite vitamins, and there was in addition a marked anemia. Superficially resembling § scurvy the condition did not respond to additional ascorbic acid, but did to extracts prepared from certain green vegetables and liver. The vitamin is one of the fat-soluble group, and chemical studies have nearly achieved its isolation. It appears to play an essential réle in the formation of prothrombin, because the blood of affected animals shows greatly decreased clotting-time. Studies to ascertain whether it plays any part in man are in the early stages. As yet the application of vitamin K treatment in cases of hemophilia has given negative results, but Professors Dam and Glavind have recently reported that vitamin K is of practical value in the treatment of cases of obstructive jaundice associated with reduced prothrombin-content of the blood. ‘They suggest in their paper that the treatment with parenteral intro-
