This gives descriptions of the skeleton of the goat, horse, pig, badger, squirrel, hedgehog, mole, bat, lizard, frog, and tortoise. He has a good chapter on the skeletons of birds and he reproduces figures of the parrot, cook, woodpecker, crane, cormorant, and other birds. First and unique edition of this very rare and little known Italian herbal. The only copy we have found recorded in catalogues, is deperibed in a prae-war catalogue, quoted for 100 Swiss Franes and an incomplete copy in our cat. XIII. No copy in the Index Catalogue of the Surgeon General’s Library. The figures are designed in a slightly crude but most interesting manner and seem to be copied partly from the figures in the Herbarius Latinus. Also of great medical interest as describing the medical virtues of each plant depicted. First leaves slightly brownstained, but a very fine and fresh copy of this unusual book with the woodcuts free of colours and in fresh impressions. — See reproduction p. 41. 125. COLOMBO, Matteo Realdo. De re anatomica libri XV. 4 leaves, 495 pp. Printer’s device on the title-page and last leaf. 8vo. Modern half calf. Paris, A. Wechel, 1572. Frs. 225, — ‘¢ Columbus (1516?-59), was assistant to Vesalius, and is mentioned by him with generosity. He taught Anatomy at Padua in succession to Vesalius, and his anatomical work appeared posthumously in 1559. The textbook of Columbus, though retrograding at some points from the Ve- salian standpoint, yet often exhibits real advances. We may leave aside the question to what extent these discoveries were made by ‘Columbus himself. He certainly deserves credit for having displaced the lens from its age-old position in the centre of the globe of the eye, where even Leonardo and Vesalius had left it. Columbus is particularly strong on regional Anatomy, and his descriptions of the Mediastinum, of the Pleura, and of the Peritoneum are far ahead of anything that had preceded him.
