Small 16mo. Modern half vellum. Leyde, 1675. Frs. 36. — Principally based upon Vesalius’ works. Jan van Horne (1621-1670), was professor of anatomy at Leyden. The above work treats mainly with generative organs and ovary. 224. HORTUS SANITATIS. — Herbarius (ig German), zu teutsch und von aller hand kreuttern. 260 (261) leaves. With full-page woodcut on the title, two other full-page woodcuts showing an apothecary’s shop and HUNDREDS OF NICELY COLOURED WOODCUTS OF PLANTS, ANIMALS, etc. Small folio. In the original binding of wooden boards covered with stamped calf (binding damaged in places, clasps missing). Augsburg, Joh. Schoensperger, 1502. . Frs. 800. — Not described by Schreiber, Kraeuterbuecher or Klebs, Early Herbals. One of the rarest editions of the Herbarius, absolutely complete copies of which are pratically not to be found. Weller, Rep. typ. 223 (knows only of the copy in the Stadtbibliothek at St. Gallen), indicates erroneoussly only 254 instead of 261 leaves of text (leaf 262 being blank), The first German edition of the 16th century, a reprint from the last edition of the 15th century (Schoensperger, 1499), only one complete copy of which is known to Schreiber. The Hortus sanitatis, the third and most extensive of the funda- mental botanical works, first produced at: Mainz towards the close. of the 15th century, is often regarded as a Latin translation of the German Hortus ‘ Gart’, but an agreement between their texts can only be found to a small extent. The Latin work contains 1066 chapters, i. ©. more than the double number of the German Hortus. Large parts, as the treatise on animals, birds, fishes and stones, are almost unrepresented in the ‘ Gart’, and even the section on herbs, which could have been borrowed from the German work, owes very little to it. The Latin Hor- tus contains the following parts: Prohemium; the Herbal (530 chapters) ; a treatise on fishes etc. (106 chapters) ; a treatise on stones and minerals (144 chapters) ; a treatise on urine, a long therapeutical index of diseases referring separately to each division of the book, and an alphabetical index to each part. Only a single leaf of the index (J 1) missing, besides absolutely com- plete. A few quires badly bound. The woodcuts carefully coloured by contemporary hand. Interesting pen drawings of the 16th century on the inner covers of the binding. A few quite insignificant wormholes, seme slight traces of use, but'a very fine and sound copy. The only complete copy we have found described in recent cata- logues, was priced 1.500 Swiss Francs. 225. HORTUS SANITATIS. De herbis et plantis. De ani- malibus et reptilibus.
