![the Other is, what is commonly called fcari- fication of the limb. [Let it be remarked, that I fpeak of both thefe, as prefcribed and pra6lifed while the gangrene is forming, as it were, and the parts are by no means mor- tified.] While the inflammatory tenfion fub- fifts, alleviation of pain, and relaxation of the wounded and fwollen parts, in order to ob- tain a luppuration, and confequently a fepa- ration, feem to conftitute the intention, which ought to be purfued upon the moft rational principles : warm irritating tindures of myrrh, aloes, and euphorbium; mixtures of tind. myrrh, with mel. ^gyptiac. and fuch kind of medicines, which are found to be fre- quently ordered, and indeed are frequently ufed, particularly in compound fradures pro- duced by gun-fliot, feem to me to be very oppofite to fuch intention, and very little likely to produce or to contribute to the one thing which ought to be aimed at, I mean the eftablifhm^ent of a kindly fuppuration.
