    CEsopha§rus, Diaphragm. posterior openings of the nasal cavities, with the larynx, and with the ears by two tubes (Eustachian tubes). The presence of this last conimuniaation can be shown in the following manner:—Close the nostrils and the mouth, and expire forcibly, when a peculiar crackling sound is produced in the ears; this is due to the air which enters the ear through these tubes rendering tense the drum of the ear (membrana t y m - Limit of diaphragm. pani). This Is made use of in certain diseases of that part of the ear into which the tube opens. The gullet (oeso- phagus) is a mus- cular tube about nine inches long, which commences at the lower end of the pharynx, and enters the stomach at its greater end, the opening being known as the car- d i a c orifice. It passes down the neck behind the wind - pipe (t r a - chea), through the cavity of the chest, and enters the ab- domen through an opening in the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a thin curtain or partition, chiefly muscular in structure, which separates the thorax from the abdomen, forming the floor of the former and the roof of the latter cavity.
