Every pra&itioner now endeavours to regain or reflore the natural paffage of the tears into the nofe ; or, when that cannot be obtained, to make an artificial one through the os unguis. Neither of thefe methods, however well defigned, have hitherto been attended with certain fuccefs. The firft has afforded little fecurity againft a relapfe ; and the fecond, even when a tube is paffed thro* the os unguis, as recommended by Mr. Heifler, is fcarcely ever effectual.
