    strpp. at the corner of two streets, in the centre of a very respectable working-class district, on the outskirts of the city. The investigator was able to take up a position from which he could see right into the shop, and could see the people being served; there was therefore no difficulty in distinguishing between those customers who went in for groceries and those who purchased beer or spirits. Altogether, 223 persons purchased beer or spirits during the twelve hours, viz. 61 men, 79 women, and 83 children. The numbers entering each hour were as under :— Time. Men. Women. Children.
