About this work

Description

"Tough Cookie Mag is passionate about exploring topics often societally stigmatised and seeks to normalise conversations around these subjects. We wish to advocate for a more inclusive art world, creating a platform for under-represented communities to share their work and tell their stories. Coming into the new year, we've teamed up with SEAS to bring you more content we care about, as we continue to tackle social & political issues through the pages of this zine, in response to their monthly exhibitions. SEAS Brighton is a BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ led organisation equally passionate about creating opportunities for marginalised communities and artists to showcase their work and speak about issues they face. We believe by working together we can continue to do the work we're passionate about, on a larger scale. Each month, SEAS curate different exhibitions that explore a number of themes and social issues. January's exhibition is entitled "Gaslighting - domestic abuse in the times of corona'. This exhibition is made up of art, words, and stories from survivors and those directly affected by domestic abuse. We understand the triggering nature of this issue for so many of us, so please read this zine with care. Optimistically, we hope that this reading experience can be a healing experience for survivors to feel seen and heard. We want you to know that you are not alone, and there is help out there if you need it. Likewise, we hope those who are lucky not to have experienced this can empathize with the ordeals so many domestic abuse survivors go through, and help raise awareness for their cause. The exhibition this zine is based on was both contributed to and curated by artist and art-activist Miranda Gavis."--From page [3].
