![POSTSCRIPT. According to the Compilers of the Monumenta Historica Britannica, pestilence prevailed in England at the fol- lowing periods anterior to the Norman Conquest :— A. D. 446. A pestilent contagion fell heavily on the foolish peo- ple. Gildas, sec. 22. (A. D. 450, in the text: see p. 7. There is no trustworthy record of the prevalence of pestilence prior to this date.) A. D. 537. There was a mortality in Britain and Ireland.—Annales Cambria:. A great mortality called 'blefed.' Tigemachi Annales. Anno 541. A. D. 547.
