![Sewage Disposal and Closet Accommodation. The Council have engaged i\Ir. Midgley Taylor, C.E., to advise and report on the existing sewage disposal works of the J^orough, and have resolved to carry out any improvement that may be necessary. A scheme is also under consideration, and will be reported upon at the same time, to sewer and drain the Sholing area of the old Itchen Urban District, which is at present undrained. Owing to the development for building purposes of many • new areas, and the erection of a considerable number of houses, some of the sewers of the Borough are of insufficient capacity to carry the volume of sewage, especially during certain hours of the day and during rainy weather. This is particularly so in the Millbrook, Shirley and Woolston districts, where the sewers are often dangerously overloaded. All houses in the old portion of the Borough, as it existed prior to November, 1920, are drained on the water closet system, with the exception of 12 privies and 17 cesspools provided for houses on the outskirts of the Borough. These houses are con¬ nected up as soon as the sewers are extended. In the districts annexed to the County Borough in November, 1920, there are approximately 400 pail closets, 190 privies, and 188 cesspools. The increase in the number of cesspools over the number existing in 1920 is owing to the fact that several new houses have been built outside the sewered area. In the districts that are sewered, 67 houses, within the statutory distance of a sewer, are not drained. These houses are provided with pail closets, etc. Outside the sewered area the majority of pails, privies, and cesspools are emptied and cleansed ])eriodically In- contractors under the supervision of the Borough Engineer’s Department. Scavenging. The scavenging of the Borough is carried out under the supervision of the Borough Engineer’s Department.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30118049_0011.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
