![William Shakespeare—continued. WILLIAM COWPER’S SET, WITH HIS MANUSCRIPT ANNOTATIONS. 1912 WORKS, with a Gtossary, carefully printed from the Oxford Edi- tion in Quarto, 1744 [edited by Sir Tuomas Hanmer], with Chandos portratt and monument plate (only), 9 vols, 12mo., orig. mottled calf (joints weak), Printed for J. and P. Knapton, S. Birt, T: Longman, &c., 1747 £50/-/- An interesting association item, having belonged to William Cowper, the Poet, contain- ing some corrections or explanations of obsolete words, in his handwriting. In all 49 pages have been selected and nearly 100 words are treated. A reference to the Glossary at the end of the ninth and last volume (which, although uniform, has been added later to the set) shows that, for the most part, the words ex- plained by Cowper are additional thereto. In the few instances where this is not so, they are alternative explanations or entire corrections to those given. In addition to the corrections, each volume, with the exception of the last, has the signa- ture “‘Wm. Cowper 1797” on title ; his bookplate inside front covers, and crest in gilt on the backs of the binding. This set has an interesting pedigree : It was originally owned by Cowper’s uncle, Ashley Cowper (autograph on title of Vol. 1), then by his cousin [Lady] Harriet Hesketh, with her autograph inside each cover. From William Cowper, the Poet, the set appears to have passed to John Hardy, who notes the loss of the last volume in 1802, and finally to Thomas Hill Mortimer in 1833. The latter has written on verso of title to Vol. 1: ‘* Note, each volume contains some corrections or explanations of obsolete words, in Cowper’s handwriting.” 1913 WORKS, with Norrs, by Lewis THEOBALD, TutrRD Epition, with Chandos portrait and plates by GRAVELOT and VANDERGUCHT, 8 vols, post 8vo., contemp. calf gilt, Printed for J. and P.
