Gentlemen, 1 beg to submit my Annual Report upon the work done in the Sanitary Department during the past year, showing particu- lars of nuisances abated and the improvements effected : — INSPECTION OF THE DISTRICT. Numerous complaints have been received as to the existence of nuisances in various parts of the District, and in addition to the work of investigating the complaints, a house to house inspection has been made in the crowded areas of the District, and also' of the 100 thatched cottages reported upon by your late Inspector. NOTICES SERVED, ETC. 99 Preliminary and 61 Statutory Notices dealing wdth 512 Nuisances have been served upon the owners or occupiers of premises in various parts of the District, the majority of w’hich received jircmpt attention ; in one case only was it necessary to take legal proceedings under the provisions of the Public Health Act. During the progress of w^ork the various premises were visited in order to see that the notices were being complied with; and frequent interviews have been held with owuiers, occupiers, and contractors, res])ecting works required to be executed. CESSPOOLS. 78 Cesspools which were found to be defective have been cleansed, repaired, provided with efficient ventilation, or re-('overed during the past \ear.
