Description

Mercedes Velasco sits on the right, bleeding from the nose. Centre, the physician, with a resigned expression, his arms folded to show he can do no more; his top hat is on a chair behind him. Far right, a woman holds an empty glass of his failed medicine towards him in reproach. Far left, placed above an altar, Christ on the Cross, to whom Señora Velasco promised this votive offering in thanks for the prayed-for cessation of the bleeding
