    left in order to take up Military duties. In spite of these drawbacks, however, I am able to report very favourably of the condition of the Asylum and of the Patients. All parts of the establishment are well maintained and the amenities of the Patients are not to any very serious degree curtailed. It is satisfactory to note that so far the general health of Institution does not appear to have suffered. Including Patients suffering from debility or requiring treatment there were to-day confined to bed only 15 of the male and 26 of the female sex, none of whom were very acutely ill. The only cases of Epidemic or Zymotic disease during the period under review have been one case of Erysipelas in a woman, which terminated fatally, and one of Typhoid Fever in a man, who I saw in bed to-day convalescing from the disease. The 56 deaths which have occurred were with one excep¬ tion due to natural and ordinary causes, 25 per cent, of them being due to Phthisis. On the female side there areverandahs for nursing Patients suffering from this complaint, but the men have to be treated in the open Wards. In the excepted death, that of a man who died from a fracture of a leg accidentally sustained in a fall during an epileptic fit, an inquest was held. There have been four serious but non-fatal casualties resulting in fractures or dislocations of bones and all of them accidentally sustained. The dinner to-day was an attractive meal of boiled bacon with potatoes and bread and seemed to be much appreciated by the Patients. The maintenance charge per head per week for home Patients is 10/6. Dr. Braine-Hartnell has the assistance of three Medical Colleagues, one of whom is acting temporarily. A. H. TREVOR, Commissioner of the Board of Control.
