Blank File.—A blank file will always be with the leading rank ; at the halt moving up into his place on the words About—Turn : on the march stepping out to take his place in the leading rank when the squad is turned about. Covering and Distance.—While marching in line, the rear rank must accurately preserve thejr covering and distance. lx.)—The Quick March. On the word March, the squad will step off together with the left foot, in quick time, marking the first ])ace by a beat with the left foot. (x.)—The Halt, On the word Halt, the moving foot will complete its pace, and the other ^^il! be brought smartly up into line with it. (xi.)—Stepping Out. When marching, on the word Out, the scholar will lengthen the pace, leaning forward a little, but without altering the cadence. used when a slight increase of speed, without an alteration of cadence, is required ; on the word Quick—Step the usual pace will be resumed, with a smart beat of the left foot. (xii.)—Stepping Short. (On the word Short, the foot advancing will finish its pace, and afterwards each scholar will shorten the pace until the word Quick—Step is given, when the quick pace will be resumed, with a smart beat of the left feet, This step is used when a slight check is required.
