    tral tribes vary greatly from people to people when intensively observed. The phenomenon is quite general; even tribes of the same linguistic stock, closely related politically and socially, are prone to hold startlingly divergent beliefs, and to main¬ tain outwardly similar yet inwardly incom¬ prehensible rites and ceremonies. In concluding, it should be noted that several phases of Menomini life are yet to be fully studied. The language of the people requires further attention; their music has been neglected and their rich ethno-botany furnishes an alluring field for research. RELIGION The present religion of the Menomini is a complex of ancient and modern beliefs, many of which seem confused and contra¬ dictory. But when examined with attention to the extraneous influences brought to bear on the tribe within historic times, these readily emerge from their obscurity.
