    perhaps unnecessary to point out that the packet used should be freshly opened, and that the cotton should at all times afterwards be kept carefully pro- tected from the dust of the room. The pads sold under the name of “antiseptic”? can seldom be depended on abroad, though possibly to be trusted in England where they are manufactured. The removal of a soiled pad and the application of a fresh one should be taken advantage of by the nurse for the use of the antiseptic wash. The actual washing is best done with pieces of the salicylic cotton, which must obviously never be dipped twice in the basin contain- ing the lotion. The nurse who is interested in her cases is scarcely likely to allow any of this work, on the efficiency of which so much depends, to be done by other hands than her own. When, as usually happens, a native female, an ayah or amah, is also in attendance, this woman should on no account be allowed to take any share in these washings ; she is of course ignorant of the importance of small details, and cannot be trusted to do the work either thoroughly or safely. Ladies often express a preference for native attendants to whose services they have long been accustomed, and this is only natural; but, unless in the case of native women who have undergone a special training, the doctor who knows the value of after-treatment in midwifery will always use his influence to secure the services of a European nurse for his patients. The nurse should use the ayah to assist her in changing the bed-coverings and sleeping clothes of the patient, and in such work as the serv- ing of food and the arrangement of toilet necessaries. Native women, as a rule, handle infants skilfully, and are able to give the nurse a good deal of help in looking after the baby. INFANT FEEDING.
