![THEODORE GALLE. Flourifhed, 1580, I'lc W3-S the , :cp Qallej mentioned in the precedino' article; and having learned from his father the firfl principles of the art of engraving^ he went to Italy in order to improve himfelf, and refided fome time at Rome* where he ftudied from the antique, and engraved from the works of feveral great mailers. He, however. Hill continued too clofely to imitate his •father; and though his works were neater, and more finilhed, in o-eneral yet the fame ftiffnefs, and defers in the dillribution of the light and Siadow* appear in them. They are well drawn, and executed with the graver only. At his return to Antwerp, he commenced printfeller; and we find he was a very confiderable publilher. The following prints are by his hand : The life of St, Norbetiy a fet of fmall upright plates, publilhed at Antwerp. The life ofjofeph and the Virginy a fet of twenty-eight fmall upright piates» CORNELIUS GALLE, the Elder. Flourilhed, 1600, Fie was the younger Ion of Philip Galle, and brother to Theodore Galle^ rnentioned in the preceding articles. He learned the art of engraving from his father, and imitated his llyle; till, following his brother’s example, he went to Rome, where he refided a confiderable time, and there acquired that freedom, talle, and corredtnefs of drawing, which are found in his bell works and render them far more ellimable, than thole of his father or his brother \ though, like them, he worked entirely with the graver. He fettled at Antwerp^ upon his return from Italy, where he carried on a confiderable commerce in prints. Among many others, the following engravings are by his hand : 1 he life of fohn the Ba^tify a fet of middling fized plates, length-v/ays, from J. Straden. . ^ The life of the Virgin Maryy the lame, from the fame mailer. Part of the plates for the Life of Chrifty after Martin de Vos, publilhed by Coilaert. ^ Thefe prints are in the lliff, formal llyle of his father, and were probably engraved at Antwerp, previoufiy to his going to Rome. Adam and EvOy a middling fized upright plate, from J. B. Pagm. Judith cutting off the head of Holo^hernesy a large upright plate, from Rubens. The Virgin Mary ft an ding in an arch, which is ornamented with flowers by- feveral little cherubs, a large upright plate, from the fame mailer. The Virgin holding the infant Chrtft, to whom St. Bernard of Sienna offers a book, with branch of laurel, a fmall upright plate, from Francefeo Vanni.
