I have not a doubt of his being the, lame artifl: with Hans or John Baldung, whofe cypher at lead was the fame, and to which name the reader is referred, * • MATTHEW G R U N W A L D. Born, Died, 1510. Profefibr Chrifl afcribes to this artifl;, who, he informs us, was a native of Afchafenbourgh, fome of thofe prints, which are marked with a cypher, compofed of an M. and a G. in the manner reprefented on the plate at the end of the volume. The works of this mailer are not fpecified , but he is faid to have imitated Albert Durer. HANS, or JOHN GRUNWALD. Flourifhed, Probably of the fame family with the preceding artifl. His cypher is compofed of an H. and a G. joined together feveral ways, but efpecially with the G. upon the crofs bar of the H. in the manner reprefented on the plate at the end of the volume. By him we have the Firgin and Child^ a fmall upright print, incorredtly copied from Albert Durer. A woman and ajatyry with another woman Jiriking at her^ and a man warding off the hlowy a middling fized upright plate, copied the reverfe way from Albert Durer 3 but not corre6l]y. We have alfo fome wooden cuts by this artifl; among others, a fmall landfcavey length-ways, with a rock, and a view of the fea. DERICK, or THEODORE GRYP. Flourilhed, 1620. By this engraver, a native, I prefume, of Holland, we have the map of Canaryy for John Speed’s Geography. The artifl has introduced fome fmall fio-ures, boldly engraved, in a llyle much refembiing that of Claude du Bofc : but they are very dncorre(5lly drawn, and otherwlfe polTefs but little merit. GIACOMO GUAVANA. Flourifhed, 1720. This artifl was a painter, born at Venice, where he refided. According to Bafan, he etched feveral large fabulous fuhjeblSy from compofitiohs of his own y but the particular ftories are not fpecified. MICHAEL VANDER G U C H T. Born, 1660. Died, 1725.
