The plan adopted in the following pages gives a short detail of the early rise and after progress of the University of Paris before its suppression ; then a sketch of the temporary systems that succeeded it; and, finally, an ac- count of the Royal University of France ; and it has been the object to make this as concise as is consistent with perspicuity and distinct- ness. Perhaps not the least interesting part of the whole may be that which treats of the courses of study required for obtaining the higher degrees of academic honours in the learn- ed professions, and the preparatory courses of libera] elementary education, which are impe- rative upon young men before they can be per- mitted to enter upon the prosecution of these professions. The University of France presents a system of instruction very complete in all its parts.
