Henry VIII. was alarmed at the receipt of a copy, though Pole promised not to publish it. See Bio- oraphia Britannica. Henry ordered Archbishop Cranmer and the Bishops to draw up an Answer to it. Latimer preached against it. See Strype. Henry first endeavoured to inveigle Pole into Eng¬ land, to explain to him the doctrine of the Popes Supremacy, and, failing in this, offered 50,000 crowns for his head, caused his Brothers to be ar¬ rested and executed. The Pope considered Pole in imminent danger from Henry’s Emissaries, and ordered a guard for the protection of Ins person. Such is the very great rarity of the book, that Mar- lev Earl of Oxford, could never obtain a copy, but was obliged to content himself with the reprint in Mary’s reign. His late Majesty’s Library, rich m every department connected with the Civil and Ec¬ clesiastical History of the country, does not possess a copy. There is not one in the British Museum. This Edition is not mentioned by Dr. Dibdin in his Library Companion, nor by Debure, Brunet, or Adam Clarke. « Prima Romae per Anton.
