In dti, or 29.7 per cent., of these deaths the infants were too feeble to take proper nourisfiment; in 17 of the deaths the mode of feeding could not be ascertained. 20 of the 121 infants were stated to have been wholly breast-fed, and 39 wholly fed on foods other tha.n mother’s milk. The analysis of enciuiries at the end of six months in reference to 1,960 infants showed that 14.8 ])er cent, of thean were still entirely breast-fed, compared with 2L0 last year. The proportion of children who are breast-fed at six months of age is muidi lower than it used to be. In 1914 it was 73.7 per cent.; in 1924, 61.4 per cent.; in 1934, 54.4 per cent., and during the five years 1942-46 the annual average was 32.0 per cent. IxFi.Axrioi) Eyes of New-uoun 2 cases of Ophthalmia Neonatoiaim were notified, or 0.88 per 1,000 registered live births, compared with an annual average of 2.70 per 1,(XJ0 births during the previous five years. 1 of the 2 cases was treated in Hospital and 1 at the Out-patient Department of the Hospital. Enquiries made later for evidence of permanent injuries to the eyes showed at the end of the year that the vision of one child was unimpaired, the remaining case had removed from the district. 90 other cases of inflamed eyes, all of which were of a mild form, were discovered or reported and enquired into.
