![POPULATION. The Pegistrar-Generars estimate of the iiopulatiou of the Extemled Borough at the middle of 1947 was 100,710, an increase of 1,710 compared with the figure for 1940. This estimate of Newport’s population is used, states the llegistrar-General, for the purpose of calculating hirtli and death rates. UwELLTNG-HorsKS. — From an examination of the Rating and A^ahiation Lists it was found xhat 292 new houses had heem rated during the 12 months ended June 30th, 1947, anR 3 had been taken off the rates. This gives a. nett increase of 280 houses. The total numheir of dwelling- houses in the Borough on that date was calculated to be 23,854, of whicli 72 were void. The number of void houses on Jiinei 30th, 1940, was 52. By December 31st the number of houses had increased to 24,198. In addition, 05 houses had been erected outside the Borough. At June 30th the average number of persons per dwelling-house \vas calculated to be 4.22, compared with 4.20 last yean, and the density of population (v.e., persons per acre) was 12.79 as against 12.57 in 1940, 11.97 in 1945, 11.95 in 1944, 11.98 in 1943, 12.07 in 1942, 12.20 in 1941,: and 12.27 in 1940. The figures for the various Wards will be found in Table 1 at the end of the Report. Central Ward had the highest numhei of persons per dwelling-house—5.08; Alexandra Ward came next with 5.04; Allt-yr-yn had the lowest—3.79 persons per house. The number ol persons per acre still various very considerably in the different Wa.rds, from 5.9 in Ijiswerry Ward to 47.3 in Central Ward. The ' Rateable Value of the Borough' on March 31st, 1948, was £706,785; the sum represented by a. penny rate xvas £3,049, and the Rate for the Financial Year, 17/’6 in the £.
