No text description is available for this image![croup, from a hoarse cold, which was attended with a dry, barking cough. No alarm, however, was awakened in the minds of the parents until the evening of the ]8th, when the child was suddenly and violently seized with croup. The family physician was immediately called, by whom the usual remedies were promptly em- ployed. No relief, however, following these measures, a consulting physician was called the next day, and other active measures were adopted. But the disease progressed with great rapidity until the evening of the J 9th, at which time I was called. On entering the room, I found the child struggling for breath, for respiration seemed to be performed with the greatest difficulty. The head was thrown back ; the lips and face were livid; and the whole countenance was expressive of the greatest anxiety. It was proposed that I should attempt to cauterize the larynx ; but so near suffocation did the child at this time ap- pear to be, that I declined attempting to perform the operation, unless the attending physician would state to the friends of the patient its present hopeless condition ; for I feared that the impending fatal termination, which seemed so likely to follow, might be attributed to the effects of the application.
