![Cold applications include pastes and medicated oils. Pastes are made of Hinga, Elio, Tamahhira mixed with Erandi-tela, Zelier-kochaUt, KidA- mAra, PalaspApado, &c. Medicated oils in constant use are, Erandi-teh, Tila tela, &c. Hot applications include Pastes, VarAluim, Fomentations and Poultices. Among the pastes may be mentioned, the preparations of Suntha, Miri, SuvA, Ajamoda, Mitlmh, NcwasAgara, &c. To prepare VardliAns, Erandi pAna, Samudra-sosha pc'ina, AhadA pAna, NAgaravela pAna, (fee. are made hot and applied. In cases of constipation, Erandi tela, (fee. is applied to the leaves before use. This oil is generally applied to the upper surface of the leaves. Fomentations (Guz.) Kumdda (Unani).—These are direct applications, either of dry heat, or of hot medicated steam. Dry heat may be applied with a piece of flannel heated over a fire, or by a calico containing heated salt, sand, brick, tile, or hot ashes prepared from various vegetables. A bag made of thin flannel and filled with hot bran, Ajamoda, BTicmga, or chamomile flowers, is often used for this purpose. Fomentation is a common practice among the natives. Several other vegetables are also used for this purpose. These include Bctma. This plant is made hot and applied by native women to the chest in capillary Bronchitis. The thick leaves of AhadA, made hot, are used as application to the abdomen, to relieve tympanities, and over inflammatory swellings, for the relief of pain. The leaves of Samud/ra-sosha are first made hot over a fire, and any grease, as butter or oil, is next applied to their upper surface. Thus prepared, they are used as fomentation to dissolve inflammatory sw'el- lings. Hot medicated steam: Flannel, wrung out of boiling water, to which poppy heads are added, is a common mode of using moist fomentation. The skin should be cerefully dried after their use, and a dry flannel should replace them. VardliAns is a common term among the natives, for applying heat to painful parts. Leaves of Avar, MarajAda-vela, Ratolio, (fee., Ehasahhasa-nd-post and flowers of Eesuri, are boiled in water for a few hours, and when hot, are thrown ii])on a towel. When the water is nearly strained, the hot leaves or flowers are applied to the diseased part or parts. ^ Medicated Baths tmauni SnAna (Guz.) Alcana (Unani).—Baths are of several kinds. There are hot, tepid or hike warm, and cold baths. They may be limited to a small portion of the body, as the hip or feet ; or used for the whole body. Water is the chief agent.
