    METALLIC SUBSTANCES. The three natural salts (Sihdhava, Miihun and Samhara) and the two artificial salts {Bida-lavana and Sahchala) are collectively known as Pancha-lO/vana. Stones : These are preparations of lime or of calcareous family and include lime stone, Sang-e-Isama, See. Other stones are Zehara-maharo, Gdhham, Sildjita, Sanggirun, and Sang-e-ydhuda. Clay : Under this class of medicinal substances, may be enume- rated Multdni-mdti, Geru-mdli, Gul-e-aramdni, Go^i-chandana, Gtl-e- kibrasi and KJiadu. METALLIC SUBSTANCES. Metals hia Hind, and Bombay).—These are simple combustible substances. Some of them are met with in nature uncombined, or in a pure native or metallic state. A. ma- jority of them are associated with oxygen, sulphur, iodine, chlorine, &c. When metals are found in combination with other substances, they occur as mineralized, and partake of the nature of ores. W^hen combined with one another in different proportions, they form alloys. Characters ; As a rule, all pure metallic substances are opaque, shining, and good conductors of heat and electi'icity. A few, such as arsenic, iron, &c. are found in a crystalline condition. Some metals are malleable, others are brittle. Malleable metals are capable of being flattened or elongated with the hammer, without tearing or breaking. They are also ductile and tenacious in supporting weights. Iron is the strongest. Lead the least so, in supporting weights. Brittle metals : Be.sides Arsenic and Zinc, others, such as Aluminum and Bismuth, may be classed as brittle metals. These can easily be reduced to powder’. Matras ■hww (Guz.) Mdtrds (Sans.)—This is a generic term among the Hindoos for a dose of medicine. It also means an irregular or a crooked stroke of a pen on a piece of paper. Mineral ashes, {Bhashma,) or a medicated oil, is also called Mdtrd. The drug isgeneral- iy given internally, in a quantity equal to the stroke of a pen, or a grain of rice. The method of administering Mdtrd, is to dip a probo in the drug, and then apply it by a stroke of the probo to Ndgaravela pdna (betel leaf), or Tulasipdm. Hlxo pdna is then taken internally. Although Mdtrd signifies an extremely small dose, the drugs used a.s Mdtrda are often administered in large doses. Natives ascribe different therapeutic properties to a Mdtrd, according as it is given in different vehicles or adjuvans. Such varying vehicles arc known as Anupdm.
